Let’s learn 5 proverbs most commonly used in everyday Vietnamese conversation with VLS.

1.    Walls have ears  –  Tai vách mạch rừng

Be careful what you say as people may be eavesdropping.

Ví dụ: Ở đây tai vách mạch rừng nên anh hãy nói nhỏ thôi.

Not so loud now, these walls have ears you know.

2.     Like father, like son  – Cha nào con nấy

Resembling one’s parents in terms of appearance or behavior

Ví dụ: Con anh  thật ga lăng. Đúng là cha nào con nấy!

Your son is so gallant. Well, like father like son!

3.     The die is cast  –  Bút sa gà chết

Nhớ đọc kĩ hợp đồng trước khi kí nhé, bút sa gà chết đấy.

Ví dụ: Remember to pore over the contact. When you sign it, the die is cast.

An event has happened or a decision has been made that cannot be changed.

4.     The more the merrier  –  Càng đông càng vui

The more people or things there are, the better or more enjoyable a situation will be.

Ví dụ: Tối nay anh tới tham gia bữa tiệc tất niên của công ty chúng tôi nhé, càng đông càng vui mà.

Please come to our company’s year-end party tonight, the more the merrier.


5.     Haste makes waste  –  Dục tốc bất đạt

You do not save any time by working too fast; hurrying will cause you to make mistakes, and you will have to take extra time to do the job over again.

An: Chạy nhanh lên! Tôi trễ làm rồi!

Nam: Đừng hối, dục tốc bất đạt.

An: Speed up! I’m late for work!

Nam: Don’t rush me, haste makes waste.
